Good Stuff Simple Swap: Imitation Vanilla → Real Vanilla

The Good Stuff Simple Swaps – Every Wednesday I share a new Good Stuff Simple Swap, one simple change that helps clean up your everyday eats without overhauling your whole pantry. You can find all the swaps here!

Vanilla is one of those ingredients that doesn’t seem like a big deal, but it actually matters a lot. That little splash goes into cookies, muffins, pancakes, frosting, you name it. So it’s worth paying attention to what you’re using.

First things first. Homemade vanilla is seriously easy. You just throw vanilla beans in a jar, cover them with vodka, and let time do its thing. That’s it. If you want the step by step and links to the vanilla beans I use be sure to check out the full post.

But let’s be real. Not everyone wants to wait months for vanilla. Totally fine.

What to Look for in Store Bought Vanilla

Even if a bottle says pure vanilla extract, it’s still worth flipping it over and checking the ingredient list. Some brands sneak in extra stuff like added sugars or unnecessary ingredients.

Pure vanilla extract should be very simple:

  • Vanilla beans
  • Alcohol

That’s it.

There are some solid store bought options that keep things simple. A couple you’ll often see are:

Always double check the label since formulas can change.

Why Swap Out Imitation Vanilla?

Imitation vanilla is usually cheaper, but it’s typically made with synthetic vanillin instead of real vanilla beans. It often includes added colors or preservatives that don’t really add anything to your baking.

Flavor-wise, pure vanilla extract is just better. It’s deeper, richer, and tastes the way vanilla is supposed to taste. Once you switch, it’s hard to go back.

How We Use This Simple Swap

This is a true no effort swap.

  • Same recipes
  • Same measurements
  • Same oven

You just swap the bottle and keep baking like normal.

Pure Vanilla Extract Simple Swap FAQs

For baking, yes. You only use a small amount, but it makes a noticeable difference in flavor.

Does homemade vanilla work the same as store bought?
Yes. You can use it the same way in recipes once it’s ready.

Can I use pure vanilla anywhere a recipe calls for vanilla?
Absolutely. This is a 1 to 1 swap.
