I loovvveee a crunchy, salty snack—and let’s be honest, who doesn’t? Luckily, finding a better-for-you crunch is becoming easier every day! I’ve noticed more brands offering cleaner options on the shelves, but you still have to be a bit of a label detective.
Some bags have ingredient lists a mile long, filled with artificial dyes and “mystery” additives that are easy to spot. But even the chips with just three ingredients can be sneaky.
The Simple Swap: Check Your Oils
The “hidden” factor is almost always the oil. If the chip isn’t cooked in a heart-healthy fat like avocado or olive oil, it’s likely soaking in highly processed industrial oils like canola, soybean, or “vegetable” oil. These are the oils we want to avoid for our everyday eats!
The good news? You can have that kettle-cooked crunch without the mystery oils or the flavor sacrifice.
Clean Brands Worth Grabbing
A lot of these are becoming available (and cheaper!) at places like Costco, Walmart, Kroger, and Aldi. I’ve even seen some pop up as a “steal” at Marshall’s!
Here are the “Good Stuff” picks to look for:
- Siete Chips: These are a grain-free staple made with 100% avocado oil.
- Good Health Avocado Oil Chips: Great crunch and super clean ingredients.
- Boulder Canyon: Always check the bag—look specifically for the Avocado Oil + Sea Salt version (sometimes they mix oils in their other flavors!).
- Clancy’s (at Aldi): Keep an eye out for their Avocado Oil Kettle Cooked chip—it’s a fantastic budget-friendly find.
- Jackson’s Chips: These are cooked in avocado oil and are incredibly light and crispy. I see these at Marshall’s all the time!
