The Good Stuff Simple Swaps – Every Wednesday I share a new Good Stuff Simple Swap, one simple change that helps clean up your everyday eats without overhauling your whole pantry. You can find all the swaps here!
American cheese has always had a spot in our kitchen. Grilled cheese, breakfast sandwiches, burgers, you name it. It melts like a dream and everyone loves it. My family included.
But at some point, I actually stopped and looked at the ingredient list on the standard American cheese slices, and wow… it was a lot. A long list of ingredients that go way beyond what you’d expect when you think “cheese.”
So we tried swapping it out.
At first, we leaned into sliced cheeses like cheddar, Colby Jack, and mozzarella. They worked fine, but let’s be honest, they are not the same. The melt just wasn’t it. The kids noticed. I noticed too, even if I pretended I didn’t.
That’s when we found natural American cheese.
Why Make the Swap?
Natural American cheese gives you that classic melt everyone loves, but with a much simpler ingredient list. It still works for grilled cheese, breakfast sandwiches, and burgers, without needing to totally change how you cook.
Instead of a long list of added ingredients, natural American cheese is made from real cheese ingredients and melts the way American cheese should.
What we look for on the label:
- Milk
- Cheese culture
- Salt
- Enzymes
- Annatto or vegetable color
That’s it.
Brands like Sargento make natural American cheese slices that check all those boxes and melt just like the version most of us grew up with.
How We Use It at Home
This swap works anywhere you’d normally use American cheese:
- Grilled cheese sandwiches
- Breakfast sandwiches
- Burgers
- Melts and sliders
No recipe changes needed. You just swap the slices and keep going.
