The Good Stuff Simple Swapsย โ Every Wednesday I share a new Good Stuff Simple Swap, one simple change that helps clean up your everyday eats without overhauling your whole pantry. You can find all theย past swaps here!
Confession time: I am a Mountain Dew addict (and at times, a McDonald’s Diet Coke devotee).
Kicking the “pop” habit has honestly been so hard for me. I can do well for a long time, and thenโbamโitโs back! What Iโve learned is that I canโt just rely on willpower. I need “replacement tools.” Having a better-for-you soda ready when the craving hits makes all the difference in the world.
Why Standard Soda is a “Simple Swap” Candidate
Regular soda is loaded with high fructose corn syrup, artificial colors (like that neon Yellow #5), and provides zero nutritional benefit. It gives you a quick sugar buzz, but always leaves you crashing an hour later.
When I want the taste, the fizz, and the fun without all the “crap,” these are the cleaner options I keep stocked in my pantry:
- Zevia:ย These are naturally sweetened with stevia and have zero calories. They are great when you want that classic soda flavor without the sugar spike.
- Poppi:ย A lightly sweet soda that includes prebiotics for gut health. Itโs a treat that actually does something good for you.
- Olipop:ย Low sugar and packed with fiber to help with digestion. This is one of my favorite “functional” sodas.
My Favorite DIY Bubbly Swaps
If I don’t have a canned healthy soda on hand, I make my own “mocktail” that still feels like a reward:
- The Fruity Fizz:ย Mix aย Baiย with plain sparkling water. Itโs bubbly, fruity, and feels like a total treat.
- The Electrolyte Sparkler:ย Mix an electrolyte powder likeย Ultimaย with sparkling water. This is perfect if youโre trying to stay hydrated but still want that carbonation.
Soda Swap FAQs
Is Stevia actually better for you than Aspartame?
While everyoneโs body reacts differently, Stevia is a plant-based sweetener, whereas Aspartame is synthetic. For many people looking for a “cleaner” label, plant-based options like Stevia or Monk Fruit are a great middle ground.
Does Olipop really taste like regular soda?
Itโs surprisingly close! Because it uses real juices and plant fibers, it has a more complex flavor than a “diet” soda. Their “Vintage Cola” and “Root Beer” are fan favorites for a reason.
How do I stop the soda cravings?
The “replacement method” works best. Instead of telling yourself “I can’t have a soda,” tell yourself “I’m having a Zevia instead.” It satisfies the psychological need for the fizz and the flavor without the inflammatory ingredients.
