5-5-5 Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs (Easy, Peelable, No Guessing)

If youโ€™ve ever overcooked hard boiled eggs, undercooked them, or ended up peeling them one tiny shell shard at a time, this method is about to be your new best friend.

The 5-5-5 method in the Instant Pot is the easiest way Iโ€™ve found to make hard boiled eggs that are easy to peel and cooked just right. No babysitting a pot of boiling water, no guessing, and no wondering if you started the timer too early or too late.

Hard Boiled Eggs are one of the things that are always stocked in my house. Just like the Honey Roasted Pecans & Homemade Cereal– once we are out, I whip up another batch because they are perfect snacks to grab and have on hand!

What Is the 5-5-5 Method?

The 5-5-5 method is:

  • 5 minutes pressure cook
  • 5 minutes natural pressure release
  • 5 minutes ice bath

Thatโ€™s it. It works consistently and takes all the stress out of making hard boiled eggs.

This method gives you fully set whites with yolks that are cooked through but not dry or chalky. Perfect for breakfast, snacks, egg salad, deviled eggs, or grabbing straight from the fridge when youโ€™re hungry and need something quick.

I use it so much, that I wrote it in sharpie on the side of my instant pot! Its not exactly a work of art, but it works! I often do 18 eggs, but I think that’s a little crowded, 12 works better!

Why Make Hard Boiled Eggs in the Instant Pot?

I love a shortcut, especially when it actually works. The Instant Pot makes hard boiled eggs:

  • easier to peel
  • more consistent
  • completely hands-off

Plus, you can make anywhere from a few eggs to a full batch for the week without changing the timing.

If you meal prep at all, this is one of those recipes that quietly makes your life easier.

What Youโ€™ll Need

You donโ€™t need anything fancy:

  • Eggs
  • An Instant Pot
  • A trivet or egg rack
  • Water
  • Ice for the ice bath

Thatโ€™s it.

How to Make 5-5-5 Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs

Place the trivet in the bottom of your Instant Pot and add 1 cup of water. Set the eggs on the trivet in a single layer if possible. They can touch, just donโ€™t stack them on top of each other.

Lock the lid, set the valve to sealing, and cook on high pressure for 5 minutes.

When the cooking time is up, let the pressure release naturally for 5 minutes, then carefully quick release any remaining pressure.

Transfer the eggs immediately to an ice bath for 5 minutes. This stops the cooking and helps the shells release more easily.

Once theyโ€™re cool, peel or store them in the fridge.

The Peeling Test (aka Why This Method Is Worth It)

This is where the 5-5-5 method really shines. The shells usually come off in big pieces instead of tiny flakes, which is especially nice if youโ€™re making egg salad or deviled eggs and want them to look decent.

I usually tap, roll, and peel starting from the wider end where the air pocket is. Most of the time, the shell slides right off.

How I Use These All Week Long

Hard boiled eggs are one of those foods that donโ€™t look exciting but end up doing a lot of heavy lifting.

I use them for:

  • quick breakfasts with toast or fruit
  • protein-packed snacks
  • egg salad
  • deviled eggs
  • adding to salads or lunch bowls

They keep well in the fridge for up to a week, which makes them perfect for busy weeks when you donโ€™t want to think too hard about food.

Soft vs Hard Yolk Notes

The classic 5-5-5 method gives you a fully cooked yolk. If you like them slightly softer, you can experiment by shortening the pressure time by a minute, but for traditional hard boiled eggs, 5-5-5 is the sweet spot.

Why This Is One of My Go-To Basics

This is one of those โ€œboring but reliableโ€ recipes that ends up being used constantly. Once you know it, you donโ€™t need to look it up again. It just works.

If youโ€™re building easy breakfasts, simple snacks, or basic meal prep routines, this is a great one to have in your back pocket.

Up to 7 days when stored unpeeled in a covered container. Many people find they last closer to 10โ€“14 days when kept cold and unpeeled, but always discard any eggs that smell off or show signs of spoilage.
