This weekโs swap is all about keeping Parmesanโฆ actually Parmesan.
Pre-grated Parmesan is convenient, but many containers include more than just cheese. Fillers and anti-caking agents are commonly added to prevent clumping and extend shelf life. Some lab testing has even found that certain pre-grated cheeses contain a noticeable amount of non-cheese ingredients.
That means what looks like a tub of Parmesan might not be 100 percent Parmesan after all.
The good news? This is one of the easiest swaps you can make.
Whatโs in Pre-Grated Parmesan
Not all pre-grated Parmesan is the same, but many popular brands include extra ingredients such as:
- Cellulose or powdered wood pulp to prevent clumping
- Anti-caking agents
- Preservatives to extend shelf life
These ingredients help with texture and storage, but they donโt add flavor. Theyโre there for convenience, not quality.
The Simple Swap
Instead of: Pre-grated Parmesan in a shaker container
Use: A block of Parmesan and make it yourself! OR look for brands like BelGioioso in the refrigerated section that only have parmesan cheese as the ingredient!
When you buy a block of Parmesan, the ingredient list is usually just cheese. No fillers, no cellulose, and no unnecessary extras.

This swap sounds fancy, but itโs not.
I grab a block of Parmesan, cut it into chunks, toss it into the food processor, and pulse for a few seconds. Thatโs it. In under a minute, youโve got freshly grated Parmesan ready to use.
Store it in an airtight container in the fridge and use it exactly like pre-grated cheese. Same convenience, better flavor.
No food processor? A box grater works just fine too.
Why Freshly Grated Parmesan Is Better for Cooking
Freshly grated Parmesan hasnโt been coated in fillers, which makes a big difference in how it behaves in recipes:
