Good Stuff Simple Swap: Cleaner Premade Meatballs

🌿 The Good Stuff Simple Swaps – Every Wednesday I share a new Good Stuff Simple Swap, one simple change that helps clean up your everyday eats without overhauling your whole pantry. You can find all the past swaps here!

Pre made meatballs are one of those foods that can either be really convenient or really questionable, depending on what’s in them. Some are packed with fillers, preservatives, seed oils, and ingredients that don’t add much besides bulk. But the good news is, there are actually some really solid cleaner options out there now.

So instead of skipping meatball night altogether, this is all about swapping to better premade meatballs that still make life easy.

Why Premade Meatballs Are a Sneaky One

Meatballs seem simple. Meat, seasoning, maybe breadcrumbs. But if you flip the bag over on a lot of frozen or refrigerated options, you’ll often see things like:

Soy or canola oil
Artificial flavors
Added starches and fillers
Long ingredient lists including sodium phosphates

Not the end of the world, but not always ideal either. Since meatballs are something many of us buy over and over again, they’re a great place to make a small ingredient-focused swap.

What I Look for in Cleaner Premade Meatballs

Nothing fancy here. Just a few basics.

A short ingredient list
Real meat as the first ingredient
No artificial colors or flavors
Minimal fillers

If I can read the label quickly and understand what I’m looking at, that’s usually a good sign.

Cleaner Premade Meatballs We Actually Buy

These are all ones I’ve tried or consistently see recommended for having cleaner, more straightforward ingredients. Most of them are easy to find, too.

Chef Hak’s Chicken Meatballs
These are really good and probably one of the most flavorful options. They’re fully cooked, easy to heat up, and work great for subs, pasta, or even just dipped in marinara. I usually grab these at Costco.

Amylu Chicken Meatballs
Another Costco favorite. Amylu has a few different flavors, and they’re a solid option when you want something quick that still feels like real food. These are especially good for busy nights when you just need dinner on the table.

Simple Truth Meatballs
You can find these at Kroger, and they’re a nice option if you’re already shopping there. The ingredient list is pretty straightforward, and they work well for classic spaghetti and meatballs or subs.

Jones Chicken Meatballs
These were a fun find. I actually found them at Troyer’s Market on a great deal, and they’ve been a repeat buy since. They’re simple, easy to cook, and great for meal prep too.

How We Use Them

Meatball subs are the obvious answer, especially on sub bun night. But these work for more than that.

  • Tossed with marinara over pasta
  • Served with rice and veggies
  • Added to a quick soup
  • Meal prepped for lunches

Because they’re already cooked, dinner comes together fast, which is kind of the whole point.

The Bottom Line

If meatball subs are a regular thing in your house like they are in ours, swapping to a cleaner premade meatball is an easy win. You still get the convenience, you still get dinner on the table fast, and you don’t have to overthink it.

Because real food should feel this good.
