The Good Stuff Simple Swap: The Best Clean Fruit Snacks for Kids (Real Fruit & No Added Sugar!)

The Good Stuff Simple Swaps – Every Wednesday I share a new Good Stuff Simple Swap, one simple change that helps clean up your everyday eats without overhauling your whole pantry. You can find all the past swaps here!

Whether it’s a quick sideline snack at soccer, a long road trip, or a busy school morning, fruit snacks are the ultimate “grab-and-go” for parents. They are a staple in our house, but as I started looking closer at the labels, I realized that many traditional options are kind of like candy pretending to be fruit!

If you’re looking for clean fruit snacks that actually nourish your kids, this one is for you. This week’s Good Stuff Simple Swap is all about moving away from corn syrup and artificial dyes and choosing options made from actual, whole ingredients.

What Makes a Fruit Snack “Clean”?

When I’m shopping for healthier fruit snacks, I do a quick check on the back of the box:

  1. The First Ingredient: It must be whole fruit or fruit puree. If the first ingredient is corn syrup or “fruit juice concentrate,” it’s going to be much higher in sugar and lower in fiber.
  2. No Added Sugars: Since fruit is naturally sweet, there’s no need for extra sugar or high fructose corn syrup.
  3. Real Colors from Nature: Look for colors from fruit and vegetable extracts (like black carrot or turmeric) rather than synthetic dyes like Red 40 or Yellow 5.

Our Favorite Real Fruit Pantry Staples

These are the best fruit snacks for kids that have passed the test in our house. They are easy to find at big box stores (like Target or Costco) or on Amazon.

1. BEAR Real Fruit Snack Rolls

These are the gold standard for clean eating fruit snacks. They are made with just fruit and absolutely nothing else. Because they are gently baked, they keep the natural fiber intact (about 2g per pack!), which helps prevent that mid-afternoon sugar crash. They have other varieties that are more like a true fruit gummy- the rolls are my kids favorite!

We like to get these at Costco, but you can also find these BEAR Real Fruit Snack Rolls on Amazon.

Bear fruit rolls made from real fruit as a cleaner ingredient swap for fruit gummies.

2. That’s it. Fruit Bars

that's it a better for you fruit snack alternative

If you want the shortest ingredient list possible, this is it. Each bar contains just two ingredients (usually apple and one other fruit). These are a bit more substantial, making them the best fruit snacks for athletesor long hiking trips.

I grab these from Costco, Walmart and you can also find these on That’s It Bars on Amazon.

3. That’s It Crunchables

These aren’t a gummy fruit snack, but I would consider them “fruit snack adjacent”. The only ingredients are fruit, or fruit + cinnamon. It doesn’t get any better than that! These are also pretty easy to find, I’ve seen them at many local store, but you can also find these fruit crunchables on amazon.

4. Solely Fruit Gummies & Fruit Jerky

Solely fruit gummies made primarily from real fruit as a simple ingredient fruit snack option.

These are made using only fruit! They represent more of a true fruit gummy if that is what you are after! Solely also make a fruit jerky that is also just a single ingredient! I’ve seen the jerky at Walmart and the Solely fruit gummies are easy to find on amazon.

Why Clean Fruit Snacks are Better for Travel

Since we are often on the go, I’ve found that these “Good Stuff” options have a few hidden perks:

  • Heat Resistant: Unlike gelatin-based gummies, these aren’t as quick to turn into a sticky blob in a warm car.
  • Satiety: Because they contain real fruit fiber, they actually help kids feel full longer compared to sugary alternatives.
  • Less Sticky Residue: They are much cleaner on fingers (and car seats!).
